FABULOUS KIRKWOOD HISTORY IN PICTURES
From Beth Browning came a real gem this morning. It seems Francis Scheidegger donated all 9000+ of his negatives to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection archives at UMSL. They are posted on a website, which you can see here . When you get to the website scroll down thru the subject list until you come to Scheidegger's photos, click the thumbnails for larger images. They start in 1949, but further on they go back to 1947...everything from Valley Park midget races to the Loop in 1947~~~ with street cars, parades, stores, homes, and much more in between! You can also type in a year at that same submit search page - I put in 1965 and the listings are there but not the photos. BE SURE TO LOOK BACK IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE IN THE 1965 COLLECTION THERE WILL BE ONE OF BILL BAILEY WITH HIS CENTENNIAL BEARD! REMEMBER THE CONTEST? And all those guys with those lush beards? Do you gals remember thinking it was weird? I did, never have been a "facial hair" type!! The site states that there will eventually be over 9,000 images! What a treasure! THANKS Beth SO much for sharing! [10/12/10 - I just reviewed this site again and didn't see back to 1947 but there are a LOT of familiar scenes, you'll love it!] Who knows what this is?
I do, I sat right there many a time drinking fountain Cokes with my mom, she was addicted to Coke! Remember, the paper cone seated in the metal holder, they were a nickel! And Doug White's mom sold cosmetics, Revlon 'Queen of Diamonds' lipstick, to my mom!
