Who Remembers Jake?
What a treat on a tired Saturday night to receive an email from pal Mike Caldwell in northern California with a great photo received from his sis Sue. Those of you who lived in the part of Kirkwood served by Jake's store at the corner of Rose Hill and South Geyer will recognize the photo instantly I'm sure. Sue Kraft, Pat Corpening and I used to babysit for his daughter's children, (Sharon somethingorother, Jake Barnholtz was his name - her name will pop into my head at the oddest of moments) )she looked just like Jake! We made a fortune babysitting on New Year's Eve, spending the night, getting the kids up and fed while the parents slept in, then we took OUR boys out for New Year's Day Brunch....what fun. Of course we stayed up at least til midnight, mostly yakking on the phone and eating chips and cream cheese dip! (cream cheese & instant onion soup mix) - a miracle we survived all that salt!
Let this photo take you back a bit to a simpler time.
THANKS Sue and Mike for sharing this. It brought back a ton of memories for me, but that'll have to wait for another post! Yes Mike, he sold cigarettes! And we were sent there to buy them for our parents, no one asked for an ID! PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE COMMENTS FOR THIS POST, JAKE'S FAMILY IS SO EXCITED TO HAVE THIS PHOTO OF HIM AND THE STORE! THANKS FOR GETTING IN TOUCH!

Indeed it does bring back memories. My neighborhood store was Thiebe's (sp?); but, I occasionally made it the additional blocks to Jake's. Mostly, my friends and I hit Jake's after exploring the old, abandoned buildings (school, convent??) on the property that now contains Meramec. Exploring abandoned buildings could be thirsty work and a stop at Jake's for soda and candy (Payday, yummm) was necessary to recharge for the trip home or more exploration.
ReplyDeleteLarry, thanks! I started out in Thebe's territory, riding my bike there for a nickel's worth of candy, remember the wax coke bottles w/ sugary syrup? And candy cigs! The we moved to Jake's territory. I have many memories of driving there w/o my license, it wasn't very far. The campus you remember exploring was St. Joseph's Seminary and convent. I did some research on that for my brother who was thinking of a movie, but we couldn't find enuf info on the German nuns who came here to help run it. The Asian Flu finally did it in. Payday, ahhh, still one of my top faves!!! Best, Leslie
ReplyDeleteI remember Jake!!!!! Oh My that is my Grandfather. We called him Poppy. Her name was Sharon Durbin. Wow that is incredible!!!!!! Thanks whoever found it.
ReplyDeleteI REMEMBER JAKE! He was my Grandfather! Amazing and not sure what or how I was driven to this article! Sharon was my MOTHER! Jake and Emma Barnholtz. You must have watched Sharon, Nancy and David as kids. I am completely flabbergasted I found this posting! WOW
ReplyDeleteDebbie, thank you so much for contacting us. Those of us who lived nearby spent lots of time with him. Yes, it was Sharon, I couldn't make her name come to my mind when I posted this, but I usually can! We loved babysitting for her kids! One of the guys on McLain Lane, where I and 3 others who were good friends also lived, has a sister who still lives here in St. Louis found the photo, sent it to her brother who sent it to me for the blog. As you can see, we love reminiscing about our youth in Kirkwood! For those of us living near Geyer and Rose Hill, much of our time was spent at Jake's. We also have a classmate who in later years lived in the upstairs apartment. Please let us know how you stumbled upon this posting, I love to hear how folks find us! And hello to Sharon if you speak to her! Thanks again! Leslie@khs65.com Leslie Vander Meulen
ReplyDeleteDebbie, no it was Sharon and Jerry's children we babysat, that must mean YOU!!! My 2 girlfriends and I sat for you several New Year's Eves in a row on Big Bend.. a long time ago, so I'd forgotten your names, I'm sorry to say. I am delighted to hear from you! I think I remember seeing Jake's obituary but do not remember when he died. Where does your mom live now? In the St. Louis area? How fun the internet can be!
ReplyDeleteHi this is Stephanie Durbin-Doss. I misread your post and thought you babysat my Mom Sharon. You babysat for me and my sisters Sherrie and Kelly! WOW lol. Unfortunately Sharon passed away in 86. My Dad Jerry lives in Farmington, Kelly and myself live in Fenton and Sherrie lives in HighRidge. This is so crazy!!!
ReplyDeleteSince I am the youngest and born in 1965 you may have only babysat my sisters Sherrie and Kelly, I believe we moved to Fenton shortly after I was born. This is cool. Stephanie
ReplyDeleteJake was my Grandfather also. The kids were Sheri, Kelly and Stephanie. My parents bought the store from him and he bought Barnholtz Antiques which was down on Geyer (i think. We lives in the unit above for a few years.

Sharon and Jerry are my aunt and Uncle so it must have been my cousins Sherri, Kelly, and Stephanie. I actually was forwarded this email by my cousin. Sharon passed in 86 I believe but all of the rest of the Durbin's are in Fenton. I live in St. Pete Fl. I am not sure when Poppy died I know I was pretty young.
ReplyDeleteI misread your post, you watched my sisters Sherrie,Kelly and possibly me, we moved from Big Bend to Fenton shortly after I was born in 1965. Sadly our Mother Sharon passed away in 1986. Jerry lives in Farmington and we all still live in St.Louis County, hop skip and jump from Kirkwood. I have a pic I'm going to try and send to your facbook when we were little tots. Probably the exact age you would have babysat us. lol
ReplyDeleteHi Dan, Stephanie and Debbie. Thank you ALL for your comments and emails. I am so glad this photo has appeared in your lives. That's the best part of the Internet if you ask me, our ability to share and discover! My friends who lived on and near McLain Lane and I all have great memories of 'hanging out' at Jake's, and the adventures we had in that part of Kirkwood as we were growing up. We graduated from KHS in 1965 so Stephanie you weren't born when we were babysitting for Sherri and Kelly, but I DO remember Sharon pregnant. She was so cute, petite and when I look at this photo of Jake, I can see her in his face. It's difficult for us to believe so much time has passed, our lives have just flown by! And all of us 'kids' are now getting older, grayer, and becoming grandparents ourselves. Time sure flies by when one is having fun, and we sure did that growing up in Kirkwood!
ReplyDeleteDan, you mentioned living upstairs for awhile. In later years, a gal who was with us in 8th and maybe 9th grade, but then moved to Affton, lived with her kids in the upstairs apartment too. I don't remember knowing about the apartment until Sally told me she lived there. Next time I go by the store I'll stop and reminisce.
