Exciting news....
Today was a great day in the Kirkwood School District. As many of
you know, trustees of the Walker Foundation are lifetime friends and
supporters of the Kirkwood community. At a student event this
afternoon, the Walker Foundation announced the establishment of a $10
million grant to build a competitive pool on the campus of Kirkwood High
School! The facility will be named The Walker Natatorium.
Students, coaches, physical education teachers, principals, school
district officials and community members were all gathered in the David
Holley Assembly Hall to hear this important announcement.
Nance (Walker) Frost and Brian Humes, trustees representing the
Walker Foundation, were the first to make the announcement to the
students.
The trustees of the Walker Foundation believe all students should
have the opportunity to learn to swim and discover the many benefits of
aquatic activity as part of the physical education curriculum. The
grant also ensures our student athletes will have a facility in which to
train and compete.
The next steps in the process involve the approval of the design
and plans for building the pool. This will be a collaborative process
with the KSD Board of Education, administration, physical education
teachers, coaches and the Walker Foundation. Once the construction plans
are approved, the schedule will be set. The District expects to break
ground this summer and the anticipated completion date is the start of
the 2015-16 school year.
We are beyond grateful for this grant to our students. The Walker
Foundation has continuously led fundraising efforts to enhance the
educational experience for our students and this is another example of
their efforts to support our students.
At the conclusion of the announcement, students and community
members met to discuss joining the efforts of the Walker Foundation by
establishing an endowment for the facility.
The first meeting of the grassroots effort is on Tuesday,
April 29 at 4 p.m. in the Administrative Services Center, 11289
Manchester Road. Please contact Ginger Cayce, 314.213.6123 for more
information.
